Paul West is a passionate advocate of growing food in backyards, cooking simple, nutritious meals and fostering connections to community and country. He is a cofounder of Grow it Local, and works as broadcaster for the ABC, travelling to regional Australia for Backroads and talking science for Catalyst.
He is trained as a chef and has worked in all areas of food production, from WWOOFing (Willing Workers on Organic Farms) around Australia, growing fruit and vegetables, to cooking in the bistro of Melbourne’s renowned Vue de Monde where he served his apprenticeship as a chef.
Paul was the host of four series of River Cottage Australia which followed his journey to grow an abundance of farm-fresh food, and then cook and share it with his local community. Paul travels Australia hosting cooking demonstrations and can be seen on River Cottage. He’s since become the poster boy for sustainable farming and organic food.
Paul has also written and published three hugely popular cookbooks, “The River Cottage Australia Cookbook”, “The Edible Garden” and most recently “Homegrown”.
He lives with his wife, two children and Digger his dog on the NSW South Coast. When he’s not on the road for the ABC, he can be found poking around in his garden, usually staring for extended periods at his chickens.
